Keep Interior Doors Open to Reduce Cooling and Heating Costs

Many people keep interior doors closed thinking that it will keep the room warmer or cooler, depending on the season. However, this practice actually prevents the spread of conditioned air and can make your monthly energy bill skyrocket. Here’s why you should keep your interior doors open while running your HVAC system:

Closed Doors Obstruct Airflow

Your central air system is designed to maintain a constant temperature. Closed doors and vents obstruct airflow and increase air pressure. Trapped air will eventually find a way out of the room through small cracks and gaps in windows or exterior doors. Any air that is lost during this time will be replaced, increasing your energy bill.

Don’t Close Vents

While we’re on the subject of controlling airflow, think twice before closing the vents to unoccupied rooms. Closed vents do not help save money on your energy bill. In fact, they’ll increase costs. Your HVAC system is designed to distribute air evenly throughout the home. Closing a vent increases pressure in the system, reducing its efficiency. It’s also likely that your ducts have leaks. A closed vent will only force more air out of gaps in your ductwork.

Install Transfer Grills

If you insist on closing doors while your central air system is on, consider having transfer grilles installed. Transfer grills maintain adequate airflow between rooms. They also help relieve your home of hot and colds spots for a more consistent temperature throughout.

Bottom line: Closed doors and vents cause air pressure imbalances that raise costs and compromise your comfort. Make sure conditioned air reaches every corner of your home. For all of your HVAC needs, contact Tom’s Mechanical at 972-388-3669.
